Pope Francis's prayer intentions for January 2014: Economic development

POPE FRANCIS' PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY 2014

Vatican City, 30 December 2013 (VIS) - The Pope's universal prayer intention for January 2014 is "that all may promote authentic economic development that respects the dignity of all peoples". His prayer intention for evangelization is "that Christians of diverse denominations may walk toward the unity desired by Christ".

"Economic development that respects the dignity of all peoples." I feel vindicated for wanting, wishing, hoping to be rich. A few have discouraged me with it saying it's wrong to desire to be rich. Okay then I will rephrase it. I won't desire to be rich. I want to at least have enough to be able to help others. Is there something wrong with that? There is so much suffering all around us these days brought about by too much poverty. A lot of us refuse to help and refused to be moved by such poignant reality. We justify it by telling ourselves: "They didn't work hard enough. They're not being wise enough. They're just being lazy."  Okay. Let's try to put that aside. The adults. What about the children? Is it their fault? Do we go on and ignore them because it's their parents' fault?

I pray for the day when I will have enough to help others. When I will have enough to at least send one child to school. When I will have enough to go to the public hospital and help one patient complete his medicines. I pray for the day when God will finally use me to help alleviate poverty and spread God's message of love and salvation.
