Speaking more than one language could be powerful protection for your brain, according to one of the largest studies on bilingualism to date. Study participants who spoke two or more languages saw an average 4.5 year delay in the onset of dementia symptoms compared to their monolingual peers. Even those who couldn’t read or write enjoyed this benefit! The study’s authors believe that the ability to activate one language while suppressing another improves the development of executive functions and attentional tasks such as response inhibition and focus. I tried learning Spanish by myself more than 10 years ago. I bought this self-teach language book and hung out on Spanish chat rooms. It helped a lot but I eventually became "aborrida" (bored) because there's no one to converse with using my un poco de Espanol. Right now, there si Youtube and I think this can come in handy! My later boss, Fr Niall O'Brien was the one who told me that I should learn a new language every three years. Such a tall order! Now I want to try if that's possible :)
